Week 2 gave us a number of exciting games to watch which bodes well for what the MLL has in store for week three. Will records be broken? Will the Outlaws continue their winning streak? Will there be more upsets? Tune in this week to find out.
Rochester Rattlers 8, Boston Cannons 7
Defense was the name of the game in this low scoring matchup, and Rochester was able to withstand a strong third quarter from the Cannons to come out on top 8-7. Each team had eleven saves, but none was bigger than the final stop made by John Galloway as time expired to ensure the win for the Rattlers (1-1). Despite scoring five goals in the third quarter and dominating at the X throughout the game, Boston (1-1) took their first loss of the season.
Florida Launch 11, Charlotte Hounds 8
The second game in Launch history turned out much different than their season-opening loss. Against the Hounds, Florida played confidently throughout the game, even though the score was close throughout all four quarters. A hat trick from Garrett Thul and 18 saves from Brett Queener helped secure the victory for the Launch (1-1). Although the Hounds had strong play, including a hat trick from Matt Danowski in his season debut, they fell to 0-2 on the season.
Chesapeake Bayhawks 12, New York Lizards 11 (OT)
Week 2 saw the first overtime game of the 2014 MLL season, as the Bayhawks (1-1) were able to outlast the Lizards (1-1) to get their first victory of the season. New York scored six unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to take the lead briefly, but Chesapeake refused go out quietly. Matt Mackrides scored with 30 seconds left to force overtime, and Stephen Peyser scored his second goal of the game in the extra period to win the game for the Bayhawks.
Denver Outlaws 14, Ohio Machine 12
The Outlaws kept their incredible win streak alive on Star Wars Night with a 14-12 victory over the Machine. Denver jumped out to a 4-0 lead, including two first-half goals from Chris Bocklet, but by the fourth quarter, Ohio was ahead 11-6. However, the Outlaws fought back, and the final minutes were a thrilling back-and-forth battle that saw a great play from Lee Zink to preserve the win for Denver.
1: The number of victorious teams last weekend who won the face off battle in their respective game. Of the four winning teams last weekend (Rochester, Florida, Chesapeake, and Denver), only the Outlaws were successful in winning their facoff battle as well.
6: The number of goals Kevin Leveille needs to tie the all-time MLL record for goals scored. Watch the Rattlers take on the Lizards this Friday night to see if Leveille can attain this prestigious record.
15: The number of goals scored in last week’s Rochester-Boston matchup, which was the lowest scoring game of the season so far.
91: The length (in seconds) of the first overtime period in the 2014 MLL season. Chesapeake and New York ended regulation tied 11-11, but Stephen Peyser scored only 91 seconds later to win the game for Chesapeake.
New York Lizards at Rochester Rattlers
When: Friday, May 9 @ 7:30 PM EST
Watch: CBS Sports Network
Last time they met: Lizards 18, Rattlers 15 (April 27, 2014 in Long Island)
These teams are quite familiar with one another, having just faced off less than two weeks ago in Long Island. This time the matchup takes place in Rochester as the Rattlers look to avenge their season-opening loss to the Lizards. If the last meeting is any indication, this could be another high scoring game. Additionally, if New York can continue their league-leading success at the X, they could have a huge advantage over Rochester, who currently has the lowest winning percentage in face offs for the 2014 season.
Chesapeake Bayhawks at Charlotte Hounds
When: Saturday, May 10 @ 3:30 PM EST
Watch: CBS Sports Network
Last time they met: Bayhawks 10, Hounds 9 (August 25, 2013 in Philadelphia)
The last time these two teams met, Chesapeake came out on top to capture their fifth MLL Championship title. This season, the Bayhawks have rebounded from a disappointing opening weekend loss, while Charlotte is still looking for their first win of 2014. The Hounds have had trouble in the early minutes of their first two games, but they’ll need to hit the ground running when they face the potent Bayhawks offense this Saturday.
Denver Outlaws at Boston Cannons
When: Saturday, May 10 @ 6:00 PM EST
Last time they met: Outlaws 24, Cannons 14 (May 31, 2013 in Denver)
Saturday, the Cannons will have a chance to give Denver their first loss of the season. To do that, they’ll have to slow down the Outlaws’ quick-starting offense. On the other hand, Denver has played two very close games this season, so Boston could have a great shot at ending the Outlaws’ 22 game win streak.
Ohio Machine at Florida Launch
When: Saturday, May 10 @ 7:00 PM EST
Syndicated: Prime Ticket, FS Midwest, Sun Sports, Altitude, MSG+, SportsTime Ohio
Last time they met: first meeting
Ohio gave up a substantial lead in the fourth quarter of last week’s game against Denver, and the Launch are coming off their first-ever victory. Both teams will need to put those emotions in the past and focus on this week’s matchup in Boca Raton. Florida showed great team progress in their last outing, while the Machine have shown signs of incredible offense, going on a 6-0 run in their first game and a 9-1 run in their second. The keys to this game could be sustaining momentum and capitalizing on offensive potential.
A New Record?
Casey Powell needs just six more points to tie the MLL record for career points. He currently sits at 416, trailing only Ryan Boyle. Powell has already scored eleven points this season, so he could very well tie or break the record when the Launch face the Machine on Saturday night.
This week features a rematch of last year’s MLL Championship Game, the Chesapeake Bayhawks vs. the Charlotte Hounds. Since 2010, the defending league champion is only 2-6 in rematches of the previous year’s final. The Hounds will look to continue this trend and avenge last year’s championship loss to the Bayhawks.
