The Denver Outlaws announced Thursday that Tony Resch and Alex Smith will serve as assistant coaches through the 2011 season. Resch will be entering his first year with the Outlaws organization as assistant coach while Smith will be returning for a second consecutive year as assistant coach. Resch brings championship experience to the table, as he was the head coach for the 2006 and 2007 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) champion Philadelphia Barrage. During his tenure with the Barrage he was also named MLL Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2008. This move reunites Resch with his former assistant coach Tom Slate (Current Outlaws head coach). The two coached together from 2005 to 2008.
“I am thrilled to have Tony as part of the Outlaws organization.” General Manager
Brian Reese says, “He is the most decorated coach in the professional ranks and has had success at every level he coached. Coach Slate and I have been fortunate to play under Tony and are happy to have him involved with the team.”
In 2010, Resch was also named the assistant coach for
Team USA, the same team that took home the gold in last summer’s
Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Lacrosse Championships. Other coaching experience comes from the
National Lacrosse League (NLL), where Resch coached the
Philadelphia Wings and led the team to four championships between 1994 -2001. He is currently the Athletics Director for
LaSalle College High School in Pennsylvania where he serves as the defensive coordinator for the Varsity Lacrosse Team.
Alex Smith will be returning for his 2nd season as the assistant coach of Outlaws. Smith has been a part of the Outlaws roster since 2006, where he served as a goal keeper for the team. Smith is also the head coach for the
Colorado State University men’s lacrosse team, which competes in the
Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA).
“Alex is a valuable asset to the team. He does so many things to help prepare our team for competition and we are glad to have him back,” explains Reese.
The 2011 MLL season begins on Saturday, May 14, 2011. Want to know how to buy tickets? Click here for our tickets page.
