Bayhawks Extend Win Streak with 15-8 Rout of Cannons

July 2, 2018
ANNAPOLIS, MD – After a somber beginning to the game as the Chesapeake Bayhawks paid tribute to the victims of Thursday’s shooting at the Capital Gazette newspaper offices in Annapolis, the locals had reason to celebrate during and after the special-edition, pre-holiday game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

The Bayhawks (7-2) earned their sixth straight win over the shorthanded Boston Cannons (3-7) and crept to within a half-game of the first-place Dallas Rattlers. Spurred on by six straight first-half goals, including two apiece by Matt Danowski and Ian MacKay, the Bayhawks took a 6-2 lead into the second quarter and maintained their four-goal lead heading into halftime.

Colin Heacock energized the Bayhawks in the third quarter with his second goal of the evening and followed that with a two-point goal to extend Chesapeake's lead to 12-4. The Cannons tried to edge closer near the end of the third quarter with goals by former Johns Hopkins star' Shack Stanwick, his first career MLL tally, and a power-play goal by Zed Williams that trimmed the lead to 12-6. However, Boston, playing without midfielders Sergio Perkovic and Max Seibald, would get no closer.

Heacock, the Coca-Cola Player of the Game, finished the game with three goals, including a two-pointer, and an assist. Danowski had three goals and four assists, while Josh Byrne also added a pair of goals. Goaltender Niko Amato continued his extraordinary play by stopping 13-of-21 shots against him and won his sixth straight game.

Boston was paced by the debuting Stanwick and Trevor Baptiste, who narrowly edged Stephen Kelly at the faceoff-X winning 12-of-22, and scored a pair of goals.

The Cannons face a quick turnaround and head to Denver for the Outlaws' annual Fourth of July game, while the Bayhawks host the New York Lizards Saturday, July 7.
